Gayathri's father ignores her objections and arranges for the marriage with Ganapathi (who is also orthodox like him). Ganapathi knows that Gayathri doesn't want to get married and tries his best to stop the wedding. He tells her that her father is doing it only for the money and that she has a right to study even if she marries. In the end, Ganapathi's words change the way Gayathri's father thinks. He cancels the wedding. Gayathri continues going to school while working in a factory at night. Ganapathi meets her whenever he can but more often than not, they have to hide their meetings from others. Gayathri likes Ganapathi a lot but Ganapathi's mother wants him to get married to another Brahmin girl who is from his home town.
